Louisa May Alcott nasceu em Germantown, Pensilvânia, em 29 de novembro de 1832. Ela e suas três irmãs, Anna, Elizabeth e May, foram educadas por seu pai, filósofo e professor Bronson Alcott, e criados sobre o cristianismo prático de sua mãe, Abigail May.

Louisa passou sua infância em Boston e em Concord, Massachusetts, onde seus dias foram iluminados por visitas à biblioteca de Ralph Waldo Emerson, excursões na natureza com Henry David Thoreau, e teatros no celeiro em "Hillside".
